John:

That's awesome. Listening is so essential for innovation to happen. In improvisation, if we have five disparate points of view on stage at the same time—multiple perspectives, as you just said— innovation will happen organically just because we're presenting the intersection of those five points of view.

R.T.:

Yeah. If you think about how cities formed, they were places where different people with different interests came together. They are where you get one plus one is three. Many people, many perspectives in one place. You can't help but create something new. Change is a constant in a place where you're listening to lots of different voices.

John:

That's a really interesting point of view from a leader—of a city, or a small group. That really says that the innovation will come from the organic conversation if it's monitored well. It's different from a leader saying, “I know what the city ought to do, and this is what we're going to go do.” It's really kind of a listening and servant approach to what the next innovation should be.

You see some leaders in politics and in business who approach their job from a perspective of, “I've done my data research, and now I'm going to choose and this is what I think.” That's a much different thing from what you're talking about.
